Cars for novice drivers: these models are suitable

The driver's license is passed, the money for the first car is in the bank. Presumably, the newcomer to the driving license already has an appropriate car in mind or has even already made up his mind. New drivers, however, must expect the insurance premium to be higher than they might have thought. This is especially the case if the driver is younger than 23 and has not completed an accompanied driving course. How to find a cheap car for novice drivers.

The most important facts in a nutshell

  • Before buying a car, the type class for liability insurance and the insurance premium should be determined.
  • The ADAC has published a list of recommended cars for novice drivers.
  • the age and the mileage do not exclusively affect the insurance premium.

Little horsepower and a lot of age: no guarantee for low premiums

The days when novice drivers used small and older cars as much as possible to keep insurance premiums low are over. Today, the calculation of premiums is based on other criteria.

A rule of thumb says: the less horsepower a vehicle has, the cheaper the car insurance is. It is undisputed that a Fiat Panda costs less to insure than a Porsche 911. But this simplification of the earlier years was enriched by other facts.

However, novice drivers still cause more accidents in relative terms than people who have had their driver's license for a longer time. This is especially true in the 18 to 23 year old group. Accompanied driving, the driver's license at 17, has led to a certain relaxation, but it still crashes more often in the age group under 23 years. In 2019, 9 were involved in an accident.759 people aged 18 and 9.663 people aged 19. Among the 24-year-olds, it was with 6.980 on the other hand almost a third less.

The expert committee of the motor insurers analyzes which vehicle types stand out as accident causers and how often. Young people rarely drive high-quality vehicles. They usually start with the aforementioned older models with less horsepower. From this combination results a consequence: Older cars with little horsepower are classified in the insurance in a more expensive type class. Not because of the cars themselves, but because of the drivers. So the question arises, which cars are suitable for novice drivers and do not break the budget in terms of insurance premium.

Pay attention to the liability class

In 2020, the ADAC set out to find cheap cars for novice drivers. However, only used vehicles were selected. Among others, it also based these criteria:

  • Type class liability insurance maximum 19
  • Purchase price maximum 5.000 euros
  • Mileage under 150.000 kilometers
  • Safety
  • Year of manufacture from 2000

At this point it becomes clear why the Verivox car insurance comparison should be consulted even before buying a car. Here you can quickly find out in which liability class the car is classified and how high the premium will be. The type classes (TK) range from 10 to 25 in liability. Type class 10, however, tends to include classic cars such as the Citroen 2CV or the BMW Isetta, which are atypical cars for beginners. Among the newer vehicles, which are classified low, is for example the Nissan 350Z to the year of manufacture 2008. This vehicle is listed in the TK 12. Among new vehicles, the Corsa E performs quite favorably in type class 13.

The German Automobile Club (ADAC) found what it was looking for in its test and ultimately selected ten vehicles as particularly suitable for novice drivers:

  • Citroen C1
  • Honda Jazz
  • Kia Picanto
  • Mazda 2
  • Mitsubishi Space Star
  • Opel Astra
  • Skoda Fabia
  • Suzuki Swift
  • Toyota Auris
  • Toyota Yaris
  • VW Golf VI

What is missing in this list are the classics like the VW Polo or the Opel Corsa B, once the typical cars for novice drivers. The Citroen C1 is in type class 14 in motor vehicle liability insurance, while the Golf VI is already in type class 18.

A look at the list also shows that the selected vehicles are not high-powered models. On the one hand, it makes sense that novice drivers are not tempted to drive at 220 km/h on the highway in the first place. On the other hand, there is also the question of fuel consumption.
